The Alice Springs Town Council is located in the southern section of the Northern Territory, about 1,500 kilometres south of the Darwin CBD.The municipality of Alice Springs covers a land area of 328.3 sqkm and is home to a population of over 29,000.
Framed by the iconic MacDonnell Ranges and surrounding desert landscape, Alice Springs is famed for its offering of brilliant natural landscapes. Alice Springs is a melting pot of culture, art, history, entertainment and adventure.
Mparntwe (pronounced m-ban tua) is the Arrernte (pronounced a-run-duh) word for Alice Springs. The Arrernte people are the traditional custodians of Alice Springs and have a strong connection with the land. According to the Dreamtime, the town of Alice Springs and the MacDonnell Ranges were created by the actions of several ancestral figures including the caterpillar beings Ayepe-arenye, Ntyarlke and Utnerrengatye.
Intent
The RFQ aims to find professional artists who can create an impressive concept for an iconic centerpiece in the heart of the Todd Mall. This art piece is intended as both a tourist attraction and as a social media attraction that when presented online, could only be identified as prominently and uniquely Alice Springs.
It is intended that successful respondents will be selected to progress to Stage 2 – Detailed concept design. The Project Team will then assess each concept design, which will then be presented to the Alice Springs Town Council for selection with the intention of progression to a select tender.
Themes
The project theme is Uniquely Alice Springs. Designs are open for interpretation by the Artist and should have a focus on being an impressive and identifiable piece which is unique to Alice Springs.
The Artwork should:
- Contribute to a welcoming place which provides a sense of belonging for those who visit the area;
- Be prominent enough to create interest so that people will want to visit and learn about the local history and culture and be a setting for photo opportunities; and
- Consider the history of the location and respond to the proposed streetscape.
Eligibility
Suitably qualified Artists and Artist Teams who meet the following criteria are invited to apply:
- Applicant must be able to demonstrate relevant professional experience in outdoor sculpture and public art
- Applicant must be able to work alongside the consultant, Alice Springs Town Council and other major stakeholders.
The Request for Quote (RFQ) should comprise of a quote to prepare a detailed concept design for a major art piece for installation in the in the Alice Springs Todd Mall CBD Precinct.
Request For Quote (RFQ) Submission to include:
- A brief statement to describe the proposed approach for the project including proposed footings / mounting
- Quote to prepare a Detailed Design Concept
- Resume or CV outlining experience relevant to the project
- Images of past projects to demonstrate your experience and style of work
What to Quote For:
The below must be included in the Detailed Design Concept should you be successful and thus should be taken into consideration when preparing your quote:
- A written description of the concept including background research, consultation and inspiration
- Concept Design – Sketches, drawings and/or a model including footings and mounting and context in relation to site location and scale
- Material samples where applicable
- Indicative Site Plan
- A Detailed Budget for the project
Once a quote has been received, the Project Team will assess the quotes and progress quotes as appropriate to deliver the detailed concept design.
If the Concept is successful, a select Tender will occur where the concept developer will have a further 5 weeks to refine the detailed design concept for final assessment.
The Artist should have an intimate knowledge of the concept, which will be presented in further detail on receipt of the detailed concept design.
Budget
A maximum budget of $800,000 (excluding GST) is allocated for the major public artwork.
