he Alice Springs Town Council is located in the southern section of the Northern Territory, about 1,500 kilometres south of the Darwin CBD. The municipality of Alice Springs covers a land area of 328.3 sqkm and is home to a population of over 29,000.
Framed by the iconic MacDonnell Ranges and surrounding desert landscape, Alice Springs is famed for its offering of brilliant natural landscapes. Alice Springs is a melting pot of culture, art, history, entertainment and adventure.
Mparntwe (pronounced m-ban tua) is the Arrernte (pronounced a-run-duh) word for Alice Springs. The Arrernte people are the traditional custodians of Alice Springs and have a strong connection with the land. According to the Dreamtime, the town of Alice Springs and the MacDonnell Ranges were created by the actions of several ancestral figures including the caterpillar beings Ayepe-arenye, Ntyarlke and Utnerrengatye.
Overview
The Alice Springs Town Centre is undergoing a Regeneration planned for 2025/2026 and will
include Todd Mall, Parsons Street and Leichhardt Terrace. The CBD Regeneration Project has raised an exciting opportunity for a series of artworks to be incorporated into the upgrades of the Todd Mall.
Through this opportunity, we are seeking experienced and suitably qualified Artists or Artist
Teams to submit their Quote for the preparation and submission of detailed designs that will be
featured in a series of infrastructure assets in the town centre, which will largely contribute to the
prominent identity of the to-be-regenerated Alice Springs Town Centre.
Intent
The RFQ aims to find a professional artist or artist group who can create cohesive design pieces which can be applied throughout the Town Centre. It is intended that successful applicants will progress to providing a detailed concept design. The Project Team will assess each concept design,
which will then be presented to the Alice Springs Town Council for selection with the intention of
progression to select tender.
What
The Artwork will feature on a series of infrastructural assets to be located in the Todd
Mall, Todd Street, Leichhardt Street and Parsons Street, Alice Springs.
These include:
- Public Litter Bins
- Information Boards
- Shade Sails
- Basketball Court Flooring
Themes
The project theme is Uniquely Alice Springs. Designs are open for interpretation by the Artist
and should have a focus on being an impressive and identifiable piece which is unique to Alice Springs.
The Artwork should:
- Contribute to a welcoming place which providesa sense of belonging for those who visit;
- Be consistent and cohesive in design to encourage a unique and prominent identity for
the Town Centre. - Consider the history and modern connection of the town centre and respond to the proposed
streetscape.
