With Beaudesert’s Davidson Park set to be transformed by a nature-based water play space, Council is calling on the creative community for concepts for artworks to capture the character of the Scenic Rim.

Expressions of interest have now opened and close on Wednesday 23 April for concepts for projects of between $20,000 and $50,000. This series of public artworks will be funded by the South East Queensland (SEQ) City Deal Public Art Initiatives(Initiative). The Initiative is a commitment under the SEQ City Deal partnership between the Australian Government, Queensland Government and Council of Mayors. It aims to enhance place-making and promote a more liveable SEQ through Public Art and Architecture. The Initiative is funded by the Australian Government and delivered in collaboration with the Queensland Government and the local government members of the Council of Mayors (SEQ).

The addition of a nature-based water play space will add to Davidson Park’s growing appeal as a family-friendly precinct following its redevelopment which has included a new stage and amphitheatre and yarning circles amid beautifully landscaped parklands in the heart of Beaudesert.

“As a place for fun, play and exploration, the nature park will reflect the Scenic Rim’s natural history and heritage, with artworks that showcase our fauna and flora; waterways and dams; mountains, rainforests and national parks and our farming and agricultural base,” she said.

Key criteria for concepts will include their ability to enhance arts and culture in the community, their focus on the region’s history and identity and their promotion of creative excellence.

Concepts will be chosen on the basis of enhancing cultural experiences, and improving aesthetics of the built environment and public spaces as well as their ability to contribute to community identity, investment through cultural tourism and opportunities for artists and creative industries.

Concepts are invited for a range of public artworks to be incorporated into an inclusive and inviting space  including:

  • creative shade structures, including designs for printed shade sails and decorative supports
  • seating
  • footpath artworks including stencilled and sandblasted designs
  • seek-and-find works hidden within the park that encourage discovery
  • light features including designs for laser-cut patterns
  • stand-alone sculptural works across a range of mediums, and
  • water play features including creative approaches to designs for water pumps.

Council has commissioned a concept design for the nature park that provides broad scope for artists’ designs, with the aim of creating a space that represents the landscape and topography of the Scenic Rim.
