The Brett Whiteley Studio, administered by the Art Gallery of New South Wales, awards an annual travelling art scholarship, the Brett Whiteley Travelling Art Scholarship, to talented artists aged between 20 and 30 with an established body of work.

For the 2024 scholarship, the Studio will offer two types of residencies under the one application: a residency at the Cité internationale des arts, Paris, for one artist, and a two-week residency at Shark Island Kangaroo Valley for five artists.

Mrs Beryl Whiteley (1917–2010) generously allocated funds for the scholarship in memory of her late son, Brett Whiteley, both to encourage excellence in painting and to offer young artists career development opportunities.

The 2024 scholarship will consist of one recipient receiving $50,000 and a three-month residency at the Cité as well as five recipients each receiving $10,000 and a two-week residency at Kangaroo Valley in the Southern Highlands, NSW. The Shark Island Kangaroo Valley residency will be administered by the Shark Island Institute, in consultation with the Brett Whiteley Studio and the Art Gallery.

This year’s guest judge is artist Jelena Telecki.

Residencies will occur on the following dates:

  • Cité internationale des arts, Paris from July to September 2025 with a further three months in Europe – for one recipient only

  • Shark Island Kangaroo Valley from 12 to 25 November 2024 with various events and programs produced by the Brett Whiteley Studio – for five recipients simultaneously.

To be considered for selection, an applicant must comply with all entry instructions and conditions.

What’s different in 2024?

This year the Brett Whiteley Travelling Art Scholarship exhibition will be held at the Art Gallery of New South Wales as the Brett Whiteley Studio will be closed for building works from 24 June 2024.

There is also a size restriction for works eligible to be considered in competition. We suggest you keep this in mind when submitting your body of work.
