A NEW ERA OF BLACKWRIGHTS AWAITS YOUR STORY

Under the leadership of Creative Associate, Amy Sole, BlackWrights supports three writers’ dramatic works through the development process from first to final draft.

The three playwrights, selected via a short submission process, will be given access to a seed commission, one-on-one dramaturgy sessions, and creating connections to industry professionals. All this plus the benefits of a program with ‘safe space’ at its core, designed around the individual needs of each participant.

ABOUT THE 2025 PROGRAM

The three successful applicants will take part in ten fortnightly Zoom sessions, over seven months between March and October 2025.

Each session will provide dramaturgical tools and theory, space to develop and grow First Nations storytelling practice, and practical opportunities to up-skill in playwriting practice.

Additionally, the program will offer a three-day intensive,  involving writing exercises, intensive one-on-one dramaturgical support and feedback throughout the work and development.

The seven month program culminates in readings of the three plays with more details to come.

Amy Sole, will be joined by industry experts who will co-facilitate the seven month program.

The masterclasses are designed to empower First Nations artists to take space and feel capable within the theatre industry – all the while held and cared for – alongside ILBIJERRI professionals. The program aims to strengthen the sovereignty of our theatre practices through knowledge sharing, with industry professionals from multiple disciplines.

This opportunity is Phase One of a multi-year program. Available to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander People only, aged 17+.
