Places: Three writers will be selected.
Who should apply: Established writers developing an original non-fiction work founded on research.
Fees and expenses: If successful, you will be asked to cover your own travel expenses to and from Varuna. If you have a Healthcare card or are experiencing financial hardship, you may apply to the Varuna Equity Fund for a subsidy of up to $300.

The Ann Moyal Fellowship offers three writers a three-week residency, from 29 September – 20 October 2025, including full board and accommodation at Varuna, all meals and uninterrupted time to write in your own studio.
We are looking for non-fiction writers researching and developing an original and compelling work with an Australian focus drawn from the broad fields of the humanities and the social sciences, particularly history, biography, climate change, science, technology, the arts and the environment.
Projects should be creative, but must have a clear foundation in research.
You will need:

a proven record of publication either in printed book or e-book form, chapters in edited works, paper(s) in refereed journals, peer-reviewed essays or extended articles or other appropriate forms of production.

to be actively engaged in writing, bringing together, editing, or otherwise producing a significant piece of non-fiction research advancing towards publication.
Proposals exploring cross-disciplinary or cross-cultural perspectives across different fields of knowledge and potential interest in the writing project by a publisher would also be highly considered towards the application.
