REMIX Summits explore the future of the creative industries. Held in different cities all over the world— from London to Sydney — these sold-out events create an important space where leaders across different industries come together to share their ideas.
Following a sell-out event in 2018, City of Perth and the Chamber of Arts and Culture WA will present the third annual REMIX Academy Perth this August.
Peter Tullin, Co-founder of REMIX Summits said: ‘It was fantastic to have a sold-out event in only our second year of the Perth edition of REMIX. It was an eclectic mix of speakers covering a wide range of subjects relating to the future of the cultural industries and creative economy in WA.’
‘I might be biased of course, but I think 2019 is probably the best line-up to date and tickets are selling out at a faster rate than the previous two events,’ he added.
This year, the Perth event will focus on four interconnected themes: Cultural Tourism, Data and Trends, The Future of Work, and Contemporary Museums.
‘These four themes are deeply intertwined: to grow cultural tourism or to embed culture into the fabric of life, we need to have a deep understanding of user data and broader consumer trends; we need to understand the changing nature of our citizens, including economic drivers like work; and need to ensure the cultural experiences and services are genuinely innovative on the world stage,’ Tullin explained.
‘Our guest speakers can each help to unpick these themes from a great diversity of specialist knowledge and experience — taking in creative ecosystems, city planning, museum developments, technology and consumer trends — as important pieces of the jigsaw to help us answer these big questions and challenges.’
About the Speakers
More speakers will be announced soon, but so far the lineup includes Sharon Ament, Director of the Museum of London and Tea Uglow, Creative Director at Google Creative Lab, and Rohan Silva, co-founder of co-working space Second Home – a social business that seeks to support the creative community attracting tenants such as Kickstarter.
Ament is currently steering the Museum of London through its next phase of development, including the creation of a major new £250 million Museum opening in 2022 in the Smithfield Market.
‘We’re particularly interested in Sharon Ament’s strategies for blurring the boundaries between city and museum, providing unique opportunities for citizen engagement and positioning the museum as a core component of wider city-level conversations rather than simply providing a historical narrative,’ said Tullin.
Honor Harger, Executive Director for ArtScience Museum in Singapore and known for her interest in technology and science epitomised by the immersive Future World exhibition in collaboration with teamLab, will also speak about how cultural organisations can rethink the way they use technology when it comes to revolutionising the visitor experience.
Tullin believes Perth is an important location to continue the conversation on technology and creative industries due to the significant investment and opportunities in the cultural and creative sectors in Western Australia, including the new WA Museum.
‘We want delegates at REMIX Academy Perth to have a chance to share ideas with some of the most innovative leaders in this space. A major capital project like the new Museum has huge implications for developments in cultural tourism and the role of museums today – not just for the Museum itself, but for a much larger ecosystem of creatives, technologists and creative entrepreneurs across WA that can leverage these creative assets.’
REMIX Academy Perth is presented by the City of Perth and the Chamber of Arts and Culture WA, and supported by State Government through the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries. In 2019 it will be held on August 29th at the State Theatre Centre of Western Australia.
