Located in the arts epicenter of Sydney, the National Art School (NAS) is one of Australia’s most prestigious fine arts institutions and has produced some of Australia’s most acclaimed artists.
Offering a range of fully accredited degree courses, including the Bachelor of Fine Art along with additional Honours and Masters qualifications, the NAS uses studio based learning and theoretical reflection as its key philosophies under the supervision of practicing artists and art historians.
Generous staff-to-student ratios encourage a more thorough learning experience, as Director and CEO of the National Art School Michael Snelling said, ‘We are an art school that equips you through skills, materials and art history to be a contemporary artist with exceptional practical foundations and a great understanding of where you fit as an artist in the grand sweep of history’.
The School’s history and reputation is immense, graduates of the National Art School who continue to enjoy success include Australia’s representative at the 2015 Venice Biennale, Fiona Hall, the 2012 Archibald Prize winner Tim Sorrier as well as important past art figures such as Sir William Dobell, Margaret Olley AC and Thancoupie AO.
‘The history is long and we continue to produce some of the great names in Australian art,’ said Snelling. ‘It is one of those rare art colleges that manages to work across both the critically and popularly acclaimed at the same time’.
The upcoming NAS postgraduate art exhibition will give the opportunity to celebrate and showcase the diverse and stimulating achievements of the next generation of artists, with more than forty graduating students from the Bachelor of Fine Art (Honours) and Master of Fine Art exhibiting.
Snelling said the exhibit is the ideal opportunity for prospective students to look at the current group of graduates and decide whether the NAS is the place for them.
In 2015 the NAS will launch the new Postgraduate Study Centre, which will add many new studios to the present capacity.
‘It will be the first time that we have had such a dedicated space for our postgraduate students. It also includes new workshops and a Collection and Archive facility. The whole site has been galvanized around it for the past year,’ said Snelling.
