A proven world leader in training and research in the Dramatic Arts, the UK’s Royal Central School of Speech & Drama (RCSSD) will be holding interviews and auditions for their 2018 undergraduate and postgraduate programs in Sydney on Saturday 13 January.
RCSSD offers a diverse range of programs focusing on performing arts and theatre disciplines, including Acting, Applied Theatre, Writing, Movement, Technical Theatre and more.
Interviews are for more than performers; the school is also seeking talented applicants for Undergraduate Degrees in Stage Design, Theatre Sound and Theatre Lighting, and Postgraduate Degrees in Writing for Stage and Broadcast Media, Creative Producing, Scenography, and Applied Theatre.

Potential students can try out for all of RCSSD’s courses (excluding MA Drama and Movement Therapy). Auditions will be held for the Acting degree programs (both undergraduate and postgraduate) while interviews will be held for all other programs, including Voice Studies, Prop Making and Applied Theatre.

‘Central graduates can be found across the globe,’ said RCSSD staff member Scott Bellamy. ‘Our most famous acting alumnus include Dame Judi Dench, Andrew Garfield and Kit Harrington amongst others whilst world-renowned Sound Designer Gareth Fry has worked on well-known shows including Harry Potter and the Cursed Child in London’s West End.’
Three tips to triumph in your interview or audition
- Give yourself time to prepare
‘For auditions, actors should give themselves plenty of time to prepare,’ said Bellamy. ‘Authenticity is the key. We are of course looking for talent also but students should be sure to read the instructions provided ahead of the audition meticulously. For our Undergraduate technical theatre programs, we ask students to bring along a portfolio related to their area of interest which is discussed at the interview.’
- Choose the right audition material for you
The material you read at an audition heightens the impression you make on the judging panel. Use material that is representative of you and your style. As Shakespeare said, ‘We are such stuff as dreams are made on,’ so let your talent shine through your material of choice.
- Show your passion
Bellamy said, ‘Central looks for people who can work as part of a team; the Central community is a special one, which is why graduates working in the industry regularly return to give something back to current students. We also want to see a real passion for theatre and the particular area in which they are applying to.’
Once you have aced the audition
CSSD has a diverse student body with students travelling from across the globe to study. Students who are new to London and the UK can access an International Pre-Course, intended for students who are starting undergraduate or postgraduate degree courses in September or October of the same year.
An in-depth orientation program to both Central and London itself, the International Pre-Course helps students understand the process of undergraduate/postgraduate study orientation at RCSSD; become familiar with the School’s modes of learning and teaching, and experience communicating with peers and staff at Central. The Pre-Course also provides information on accommodation, finances, cultural experiences and other practical aspects of living and studying in London.
