Past student Hugh Jackman credits Actors Centre Australia for sparking his love of the performing arts. ‘My own acting journey began there over 26 years ago and I will be forever grateful,’ Jackman said.
A world renowned educational institution focused on the dramatic arts, Actors Centre Australia, situated in their new purpose-built 12 million dollar theatre complex in Leichhardt, NSW, is recognised for its innovative educational methods.
Founding Director Dean Carey originally devised the curriculum, refining and perfecting the course content over the years in collaboration with teachers and staff.
‘We have a paradigm for learning which is high challenge matched with high support equals high performance. So the challenge is high, the support is high and therefore the outcome is always high-quality,’ Carey said.
As well as its outstanding curriculum, a commitment to the students and a focus on a vibrant culture helps put Actors Centre above other institutions.
Carey explained: ‘What we don’t do at Actors Centre is we don’t cull. Many other schools will take 40 people and then cull down to 15. We accept 26 people, and with hand on heart, we commit to graduating 26 people.
‘When the student is accepted they know that the teachers have voted unanimously to take them into the program, and they are not suffering under any sense of fear or competition,’ he said.
‘I say to the students on their first day, “Our commitment is for your course to be phenomenal – that is our commitment to you all.” Therefore the teaching environment is not random. So once you’ve got your sights set on that it becomes very hard for it to fall away. And you’ve got that sense of commitment all around you.’
AUDITION FOR THE ADVANCED DIPLOMA OF PERFORMING ARTS
Actors Centre Australia is now calling for auditions for the Full Time Advanced Diploma Course: Journey Program.
Auditions will be held at the Italian Forum, Leichhardt from Monday 4 June until Saturday 9 June with 9am and 2pm sessions daily.
Carey advised potential students, when auditioning, ‘to trust in yourself; trust in the work you have done; trust in the character you are going to perform and engage us with, and trust in the power and magic of live theatre which is what an audition is.
‘It is live theatre, you will have 25 people in a room – everyone in that room is passionate about the industry. It’s a fantastic environment in which to play, share, and engage with.’
The two and a half year, full time (10560NAT) Advanced Diploma of Performing Arts (Acting) has distinct elements with the course curriculum.
The philosophy at Actors Centre is a place of mutual collaboration, respect and support. This course will embrace your gifts and honour your personal and artistic journey.
