The Australian Theatre for Young People (ATYP) holiday program for kids and teens is about much more than performance.
ATYP Workshop Manager Robert Jago says that ATYP students don’t just join a course, but a community. Kids and teens are challenged and encouraged in a safe environment while they collaborate with their peers to produce a piece of theatre uniquely suited to the group.
From 29 June to 10 July, ATYP is offering more than 25 workshops at its premises within The Wharf arts precinct on Sydney Harbour and in selected venues close to the CBD.
‘These holidays we truly have something for everybody. From great story-telling adventures in faraway kingdoms to creepy abandoned houses,’ said Jago.‘There’s fun for everyone from kinder to Year 12 this winter at The Wharf.’
Program highlights include Bush Magic, for kinder to year 2 which includes a ticket to May Gibbs’ Australian classic Snuggle Pot and Cuddle Pie at the Sydney Opera House. Students follow the performance by writing a story inspired by the production and then perform it for their family and friends at the end of the week. For year 4- 6 kids My Reality Rules gets students to create their own reality television show. Pulling the Strings! for year 5-6 students delves into the amazing world of puppetry, taught by one of Sydney’s leading puppeteers.
Older students can choose from a range of genres including Shakespearean classics, comedy and musicals. Year 7-9 students can learn about The Modern Musical being run by legendary performer Simon Burke. For year 10-12 teens Sketch Comedy offers a class in comedy, where students learn to write their own original sketch and play with improvisation techniques.
Whatever the age level or theme, the courses aim to ignite students’ imaginations and give them a positive participatory experience.
