Most recently she has found herself in front of a much larger audience, appearing on ABC’s Spicks and Specks, in a one off special titled Hannah Gadsby Goes Domestic, and currently, on a weekly basis, on Adam Hills In Gordon Street Tonight.
This is Hanna Gadsby’s first outing on DVD and I’m very pleased to report that it does not disappoint. This production is part of Madman Entertainment’s new Warehouse Comedy Festival series, filmed in a Collingwood pop-up venue.
Kiss Me Quick, I’m Full of Jubes (please refer to the DVD or Hanna’s mother for an explanation of the title) was originally performed at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival and at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2009, and for anyone who has not yet experienced this unique talent, it is the perfect showcase of what she does best.
Although her choice of material can hardly be called original (e.g. Tasmania, childhood, and being “slightly lesbian”) Gadsby’s thoughts on such matters, and her extraordinary delivery, certainly are. And regardless of one’s gender, sexual preference or country of origin, Gadsby always manages to create enough substance and relevance for the vast majority of the paying public to identify with and ultimately enjoy.
There is a wonderful balance of confidence, vulnerability, and honesty in her performance style. Yes, she is a comedian and as such must adopt a stage persona, but the guise she has adopted is such that you would be hard pushed to know fact from fiction. Some of my thoughts of ‘Surely this cannot be true?’ were quashed after watching the two short films contained in the DVD extras (proof of clothing abuse as a child and confirmation by her brother that yes, her mother truly is as strange as Hannah reports).
I was really impressed with the way this DVD has been put together. The camerawork throughout is simple, direct and conveys both the energy of the performance and the audience perfectly. If you’re looking for an hour’s worth of solid comedy to brighten up your day than I can wholeheartedly recommend you spend an hour with Hanna Gadsby.
