Patrick Flynn in the Adelaide Fringe Festival’s Hollow Trophy is a very convincing ‘Aussie Rules Footy Hero’, lock up your daughters when these heroes’ hit town as no one would be safe!
Hollow Trophy is a dark comedy that leaves you thinking the stories in the papers accusing footy players of gang rape could well be true! The show is about life in the world of sporting stardom. It centres on a man who loves three things more than anything in the world: footy, his number, and himself.
He shares his views on life, love and the problems with today’s society. A strong admirer of The AFL’s Footy Show’s Sam Newman, whom he describes as “a good bloke”, Patrick shows us the challenges of living in a world where every girl wants him, and every guy wants to be him. Add to that, good looks, a charming personality and, he adds bashfully, “many women have complimented me on my package”, but qualifies “but it’s not about that”.
Set, stage and lighting were basically nonexistent but there appeared to be no requirement for them. A solitary chair and a water bottle were the main props used, apart from the AFL football shirt that appeared for a very short time.
There is frequent use of the ‘f’ word and in this context seemed acceptable. I think we have become desensitised to its use and regard it as normal. I would not recommend this show if you are not accustomed to a wide range of colourful language” and a very descriptive way of discussing the interactions between a woman and a man, from a man’s point of view.
The intimate Iris Cinema located at 13 Morphett Street Adelaide, in the heart of the city, is a great venue for this comedy – there is nowhere to hide. Are footy players really this arrogant? Go and see Hollow Trophy and make up your own mind.
