Asia is a booming region culturally – a source of great international activity, new art fairs and a massive growth in the number of museums. Asian countries are increasingly touting their artists – but it is almost always the male artists.
Indonesian artist Grace Siregar brought the issue to public attention recently when she posted on Facebook, ‘I’m stunned that my male artist colleagues are always presented as the face of the Indonesian contemporary art world. How about the Indonesian female artists who are doing amazing work but rarely given the same attention in the media and by researchers and academics?’
