There will come a point when people will stop talking about Melissa Loughnan’s age and instead talk about her curatorial skills, her professionalism and business foresight. But not quite yet.
In some ways it’s not where she’s at now that’s so impressive, director of her own small gallery, Utopian Slumps, in one of Melbourne CBD’s bluestone curbed laneways, neighbours with other new galleries, a jazz club and a motorbike mechanic. Or that she’s representing 11 artists who are all older than her. It’s not just her building reputation; her impressive art contacts and focussed client lists. It’s that for someone of 29, she’s been strategically building her career in the arts for over 10 years and she continues to be fixed on long term goals.
