By now we’ve all heard of Australia’s ‘two speed economy’ – a side effect of the mining boom which causes wealth to accrue predominantly in mining towns, while other areas, suffering from higher interest and exchange rates as a result of the boom, lag behind.
The concept of ‘two speed cities’, however, is less well known. But in places like the southernmost suburbs of Adelaide and Melbourne’s outer northern fringe, a significant gulf is growing between the well-resourced inner city and the suburbs on the outer rim.
