Adam Hills is sitting by the pool, fielding calls from journalists. He may lead the luxuriant life of an Australian television star, but the other LA hotel goers have no idea who he is. With the Spicks and Specks stage show spectacular finale nearing, Hills is taking some deserved time out before heading back to Australia for rehearsals when my call comes in. But so far his only preparation has been reading the biography of Gene Kelly, and he’s picked up a slight British accent from a recent tour of the isles.
When I ask he laughs bemusedly. “I didn’t realise I’d picked it up..but I must’ve. When I’m in England I tend not to hang out with a lot of Aussies, and my managers are ‘proper cockney’,” he says with accurate scampish intonation.
