Themes of climate crisis, mass extinction, rising seas and political inaction in the face of existential threat are hitting the Melbourne Fringe big time this year. It seems that indie artists are bringing the doom, if not necessarily the gloom.
Which raises the question: are we we simply anaesthetising ourselves, rather than facing up to the environmental destruction of our planet? Is it wrong to laugh in the face of extinction, or are these shows about giving us strength and solidarity in the face of the biggest challenge of our time?
