Shifting focus: rediscovering photography

Artists today are less limited by the traditional boundaries of photography, and art schools are following suit to accommodate contemporary needs

What is happening with photography in art schools? It is a question that many institutions are asking today as numbers shift and slide across departments; the medium finding a next generation of fluidity and contemporary expression.

Geoff Kleem, Head of Photography at Sydney’s National Art School (NAS) said, ‘It is just a medium – it doesn’t mean anything until it is driven in a direction. The technology was simply pragmatic. It was just a platform for what you were doing with it. We have come to understand that now.’
