The first painful steps after a serious operation can be as difficult as the most complicated circus act. Sweat beads from your brow as you perch precariously on your crutches, clenching your teeth in pain. Nurses murmur words of encouragement, sad remnants of the ‘oohs’ and ‘aahs’ of audience appreciation.
One of the hardest parts of performing the act of recovery is knowing that there is a long journey ahead just to get to the point of being able to do the simplest tasks – things that seemed so natural not that long ago.
