As ABBA sang so poignantly in 1976, ‘money, money, money, must be funny’. In 2023 for creative artists, raising sufficient money is becoming an increasingly necessary component of the artistic journey.
Not only do artists need to think, explore, potentially collaborate and ultimately produce art that is somehow worthwhile, entertaining, educational or all of the above, they also need to finance it. Accessing ongoing financial support for artistic practice has always been a complex and daunting prospect. Throw almost four years of pandemic uncertainty into the mix and that complexity grows exponentially.
