Exit Interview: Jessi England leaves The Lock-Up

England has led this independent Newcastle gallery to great heights, including rebranding after closure and growing it to national recognition.

For seven years, Novocastrian Jessi England has had The Lock-Up’s best interests in mind. When asked to sum up that period, she chose her words carefully: ‘challenging, dynamic and embedded in the community’.

Built in former police holding cells, The Lock-Up is a not-for-profit, multidisciplinary contemporary art space in Newcastle, about 160km north of Sydney in the Hunter Region.
