The Archibald is one of Australia’s most prestigious arts prizes and its winner’s name will be etched in history. But no matter who the winner is, no one can dispute that the exhibition is one of the few that bridges the gap between popular culture and high art so successfully.

This year the winner was Del Kathryn Barton for hugo, which is a brightly coloured combination of illustrative styles and contemporary designs where the artist has attempted to recreate a personal symbology of actor Hugo Weaving’s rich stories. This is the second time that Barton has won the award.
