In the wash-up of the 2016 Melbourne Art Fair’s shock demise, it became clear that Australian galleries are beginning to see as much value in participating in international art fairs as in local ones. While institutions like MONA have added to our appeal, Australia has sometimes found itself the victim of the tyranny of distance when it comes to visits from international curators and collectors. However, galleries here are well-positioned geographically to avail themselves of the ever-broadening offering of fairs throughout the Asia-Pacific – bringing the mountain to Mohammed.
