Perhaps the best known fashion- artist collaboration was between Italian couturier Elsa Schiaparelli and surrealist
Salvador Dali. Their creations include a dress designed with tears (far more radical in the days before ripped jeans became a fashion item), a lobster dress and a skirt made like a chest of drawers. There was also a skeleton dress made with padding so that the plain black dressed looked like it was being worn by a skeleton. The shoe hat from Schiaperelli’s 1937 collection was inspired by a photograph of Dali taken by his wife Gala with one of her slippers balanced on his head.
