When you are an artist relying on freelance pay, or grant money, your pay can ebb and flow and the period of time between the ebb and the flow can often feel far too long. Here are some ideas for budgeting, and making your funds last that extra month or two.

Put your grant money into a separate account and pay yourself a salary. It might sound like you are just limiting yourself, but it’s much better than starving in the weeks leading up to your next payment. This takes some maths, but decide how often you are going to pay yourself, if it is weekly, then divide your grant money by how many weeks you need to live off it for and that is how much you pay yourself. You can even automate the payments so that you don’t have to look at that big number so often.
