Rather than vying for the ultra-competitive world of big businesses, it may be well worth taking a look at the smaller companies who are doing great work in your area. The benefits of being part of a smaller team include making stronger connections with your employer and co-workers and increasing your chances of having your work noticed. In a smaller environment, you’ll also be able to gain more feedback on your work and grow as an employee.

You may be expected to work harder at a smaller company, but that will only increase your abilities and add an impressive set of diverse skills to your resume. Smaller companies can also create a more close-knit environment in which you are likely to feel more appreciated – and in turn, more appreciative – of your job. A lack of competition in a smaller workplace also means that you may get to incorporate more of your ideas and your personality into your work than you would working for a larger company.
