How to take a leap

If you can overcome fear 2016 could be a 'leap year' in more than a calendar sense.

Perhaps you’ve mulled over becoming a freelance writer or a full time artist, or have the desire to curate an exhibition, write a book, start a personal project, or pursue a career in the arts.

While 2016 only offers one extra day, a leap year can ‘put you in the mindset to consider new possibilities’, says digital strategist Kylie Lewis.

After taking a leap of her own, Lewis was inspired to collect advice and insight from creatives who have done the same in The Leap Stories.

The biggest lesson so far? That taking a leap isn’t about changing your life in a day. The truth is, a leap doesn’t have to be all or nothing.

‘From the outside something might look like a giant leap, but often it is a series of smaller ones that culminate into something bigger. Taking the leap doesn’t have to be all encompassing,’ said Lewis.

Taking small steps instead of a giant leap towards a goal can help you better manage your self-care and avoid the burn out that comes with taking on too much, too soon.

‘I’m all for getting out of your comfort zone, and you have to do brave things and you have to get uncomfortable, but you have to be really mindful of your boundaries. I’m not going to “hustle” so hard that I’m going to take myself down in the process,’ said Lewis.

If you are wishing to transition to a different industry or pave your way in a new career, consider going part-time first, taking on freelance jobs to ease yourself into the new space and building up a network of contacts before you let go of your safety net.
