The Role
The Place Development Officer plays a pivotal role in transforming spaces into vibrant, appealing, and flexible areas that draw in businesses, boost economic activity, and welcome visitors to the Town. This role is integral to the Town’s strategic planning and development initiatives, leveraging expertise in Place Making principles and practices to foster thriving environments.
Working within the Planning and Community Services Directorate, this position collaborates closely with key stakeholders in other Directorates to ensure a cohesive approach to place making. Additionally, they engage with a wide array of external stakeholders, including business owners, government agencies, and the broader community, ensuring diverse needs and perspectives are considered in the development process. This position is crucial in creating dynamic spaces that contribute to the Town’s overall vibrancy and appeal.
Selection Criteria
The successful candidate’s core values will mirror the Town’s values of Friendly and helpful, Teamwork, Creativity, Integrity, and Respect, and be able to demonstrate the following:
- Previous experience of place management, urban design, and/or urban planning is essential. Previous experience in economic development would be highly regarded.
- Demonstrated understanding of contemporary place making, economic development, tourism, and the urban design challenges of an inner city and town centre development environment.
- An understanding of contemporary public realm and street design enhancement principles is desirable.
- Ability to analyse complex information to create innovative responses to project briefs using well-developed written communication skills.
- Strong verbal communication and interpersonal skills, including proven negotiation skills, supporting collaborative work with diverse stakeholders.
- Demonstrated project management experience.
- Tertiary qualifications in the areas of urban design or strategic urban planning or related disciplines. Additional or post-graduate qualifications in the areas of marketing and communications, community engagement, project management, and/or local economic development would be highly regarded.

- Valid WA drivers licence.
