Ladies Cutter, Deputy Supervisor

Opera Australia is seeking an experienced Ladies Cutter, Deputy Supervisor to join our creative and dedicated Wardrobe team!

About the Role

The Deputy Supervisor, Ladies Cutter will play a vital role both independently and as part of a collaborative team. Key responsibilities include cutting period and contemporary costumes, conducting fittings, instructing and supervising staff, advising on material requirements, and refurbishing costumes for both new productions and revivals.

This role is required on a full-time fixed term contract work on a 2-year contract

The Opportunity

• Interpret designs and provide expert advice on fabric selection and methods, considering the needs of the designer, performer, and the revival of the production. Demonstrate a keen eye for detail and colour balance.

• Flatten, drape, and select suitable fabrics for the manufacturing of opera costumes. Cut costumes for all periods of women’s fashion with precision.

• Take accurate measurements and conduct fittings professionally, advising on fit and proportions. Alter patterns and costumes as needed to achieve the best results.

• Plan your own work schedule and coordinate with team members to ensure all costumes are prepared for fittings and the initial piano dress rehearsal.

• Lead and guide others in the costume-making process, resolving issues and maintaining effective communication with management, the wardrobe supervisor, buyers, and designers.

About You

• Hold tertiary qualifications in women’s cutting or an equivalent field.

• Have experience in cutting corsets, period costumes, draping, and contemporary garments.

• Demonstrate a proven ability to interpret designs and possess strong knowledge of fabrics.

• Exhibit highly developed interpersonal skills and a strong capacity for teamwork.

• Value knowledge of the arts and entertainment sector.

• Be a clear and confident communicator with a sharp eye for detail.
