Gallery / Retail Assistant

Gallery M is seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic casual assistant to join our team.

ABOUT GALLERY M

Gallery M is located in the Marion Cultural Centre in Oaklands Park Adelaide SA and is managed on behalf of the City of Marion by the Red House Group Inc.

ROLE PURPOSE:

This role supports operational functions of both the gallery and retail shop located within the Marion Cultural Centre in Oaklands Park SA.

Through the provision of outstanding customer service and positive visitor experience the Gallery and retail Assistant is responsible for contributing to the successful operations of, the physical retail shop, the E-Commerce space and Gallery M.

Job Overview:  This dynamic role combines traditional retail duties within the unique atmosphere of an art gallery. You will be responsible for a variety of tasks, including, social media, visual merchandising, photographing stock, handling transactions, managing inventory, and ensuring the smooth operation of the gallery retail space.

This position will also provide administrative support to both the Gallery and Red House Group Coordinator as required. You will play a key role in supporting the gallery’s mission to positively promote art and craft to a diverse audience.

Minumum hours 15 per week over a 6 day roster – some evenings may be required for exhibition openings and special events.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:

Customer Service: Offer exceptional service by greeting and assisting gallery visitors, answering questions, and providing information about the products and artworks on display.

Inventory management: Accurately manage incoming stock, including but not limited to data entry and barcoding of objects, processing of sales and retail purchases online, and in the physical shop space, ensuring smooth and efficient transactions for all gallery visitors.

Visual Merchandising: Organize and maintain aesthetically appealing displays to create an engaging and inspiring environment for gallery visitors and customers.

Communication and marketing: Take professional photos of artworks and products for marketing, and promotional purposes, ensuring the visual presentation aligns with the gallery’s brand and standards. Assist with website maintenance and content. Assist with and schedule newsletters, social media posts, Mailchimp and Humanatix promotions.

Exhibition Support: Assist with administration tasks required for exhibition openings and special gallery events, ensuring the gallery is well-prepared and welcoming.

Gallery Assistance: Support the installation team with deinstallation, and display of artwork within the gallery and retail space. Provide information to customers and visitors about the artworks, artists, and exhibitions.

Skills/experience:

Previous experience in retail, art galleries, or similar customer-facing roles is essential.

Excellent visual merchandising skills and the ability to create engaging displays.

A strong appreciation for art and product design and an understanding of its context and appropriate presentation.

Comfortable handling cash and EFTPOS transactions, with knowledge of point-of-sale systems.

Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage with a wide range of visitors.

Ability to work both independently and as part of a collaborative team.

Current RSA certificate or willingness to attain. (cost covered by gallery)
