EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

  • Based in the heart of Melbourne’s Arts Precinct, The Australian Ballet School (ABS) is Australia’s premier institution for vocational dance education, shaping the future of ballet through world-class training, health and wellbeing programs, and artistic excellence.
  • For over sixty years, the ABS has transformed young talent into elite performers and choreographers who shine on the global stage.
  • Significant opportunity for an accomplished leader who is excited and energised by building on a legacy and organisational renewal.

Established 60 years ago through the vision of enthusiastic artists including Dame Peggy van Praagh DBE and Dame Margaret Scott DBE, AC, ABS prepares young artists for a professional career in dance by offering an internationally recognised full-time vocational dance training program, accredited since 1994. Typically, over 85% of ABS graduates are employed in professional roles within 12 months of graduation – one of the highest employment rates of any tertiary institution in Australia.

Following the appointment of a new Artistic Director and Head of School in 2024 and an uplift of federal government funding, the School is progressively undertaking a comprehensive strategic review encompassing: organisational structure, curriculum, digital transformation, facilities upgrades, and new creative initiatives.

The ABS Board is seeking an Executive Director (ED) who is an experienced management all-rounder and strategic thinker.

This is a critical role that requires an accomplished executive leader with high emotional intelligence and an appreciation for working with young people in a complex, regulated environment. The ideal candidate will be an exceptional communicator, with expertise in business operations and planning, stakeholder engagement, governance and financial management.

Reporting to the Board, the position is a co-leadership role working in partnership with the Artistic Director and Head of School, and as part of a collaborative Executive Team. The ED is responsible for leadership and effective management of all enabling functions to ensure that the ABS delivers on its vocational training, educational and artistic purpose and strategic vision.

This role is unique within the Australian vocational training landscape, and several career pathways may lead to it. Interested applicants are encouraged to contact REA to obtain a copy of the key selection criteria and detailed Candidate Pack, and a confidential discussion about the role and their potential candidacy.
