Curatorial Lead

Started in the late 1960s by Allan McCulloch, Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery (MPRG) has a strong history & legacy as a supporter of contemporary Australian art, a legacy continued through our exhibition program & permanent collection holdings. Presenting 12 exhibitions a year, 4 of which celebrate locally-based practitioners, the Gallery also has a substantial collection of predominantly works on paper. Every two years, we host one of the oldest prizes in Australia, the National Works on Paper. Our mission is to connect to local, state, national & international audiences & take part in national discourses on art & cultural value for the future. We do this in one of the most spectacular settings in Victoria, the Mornington Peninsula.  

A destination in its own right, the region is characterised by unique townships, high quality produce, world renowned landscapes, tourist regions and areas of national & international conservation significance. It also boasts an active arts community. 

One hour from Melbourne CBD (located in Mornington), the Gallery operates under the Mornington Peninsula Shire. The Mornington Peninsula Shire is responsible for a broad range of infrastructure & community services that support the wellbeing & prosperity of our diverse community. With approximately 1000 employees, it is a busy & vibrant workplace.

Security – Permanent full-time role, based at Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery. Band 6 – $94,764–$102,870 per annum (super additional) 

About the Role: 

The role of the Curatorial Lead will implement MPRG Programming. You will be responsible for high level exhibition, project development, resource development & delivery as well as collection management & interpretation. These activities ensure industry standards are maintained, while growing the reach & accessibility of art within our community. 

Reporting to the Gallery Director the core responsibilities include:  

  • Leading the delivery & implementation of an innovative & engaging exhibition program.  
  • Curating a range of creative projects at MPRG and off-site.  
  • Supporting the exhibition program through research, writing, publications, learning resources, public programs & funding applications.  
  • Overseeing the development, interpretation & care of the MPRG’s Permanent Collection. 
  • Managing a team of 3 staff.  
  • Generating exhibitions.  
  • Instigating MPRG Collection shows.  
  • Selecting relevant touring shows, including NGA initiatives.  
  • Contribute to Public & Education programming.  
  • Develop new audiences.  
  • Writing for MPRG publications and developing new initiatives.  

About You: 

  • You are a forward thinker and have a positive outlook. 
  • You can work with a small but highly focused & performing team.  
  • Someone whose contribution to the Gallery and the wider community will see them serve to deliver on the high standard of programming & engagement with contemporary Australian artists.  
  • As well as wide exhibition experience, you will have collection management experience.  
  • Bachelor’s degree/ Master’s degree in Art History, Museum or Curatorial studies is essential.  
  • Sound knowledge of and experience in, professional gallery practice including exhibitions, research, cataloguing, fundraising & project management. (Minimum 5 years industry experience preferred).  
  • Demonstrated experience in the development & delivery of engaging creative programming, exhibitions, events & public programming.  
  • Appropriate experience & engagement working with a public art collection.  
  • Previous experience leading or supervising a team.
