$80,000 – $90,000 per annum

Desart is the peak body for Central Australian Aboriginal art and craft centres in the cross-border regions of the Northern Territory, South Australia and Western Australia. Founded in 1992 and incorporated in 1993 under the Northern Territory Associations Act, Desart’s current membership comprises 40 independently governed Aboriginal art centres within a complex geographic and culturally diverse region.

Desart is committed to ensuring that more Aboriginal people are trained and employed in the Aboriginal arts industry. Aboriginal art workers work along artists and art centre staff in a variety of roles including administration, studio support, retail sales, cultural liaison and translation. They serve a vital role in their art centres and communities and supporting their professional development and career opportunities is a Desart priority.

The Art Worker Program sits within the ‘My Job, My Learning’ Pillar in the Desart Strategic Plan with a long-term goal to increase employment and career pathways for Aboriginal people in the arts.

The program’s strategic commitments are to:

• Identify and promote employment opportunities and career pathways within the arts.

• Support and facilitate access to professional development opportunities for Aboriginal artworkers within the industry.

• Develop programs which support art worker industry knowledge and skills, and leadership qualities.
