Art Centre Manager

Dynamic, exciting leadership position managing Moa Arts, in the Torres Strait Islands.

The Role

The Manager oversees all aspects of the art centre’s operation and reports directly to the Board of Directors. They are responsible for ensuring strategic and sustainable growth through implementation of the business plan as well as maintaining and developing relationships within the cultural, arts, tourism, Indigenous and economic development sectors. This position manages three full time and one part time staff member and a range of consultants and service providers. 

The Manager is also responsible for administration, financial management, funding, marketing, sales, and ensuring the delivery of arts and cultural services. To succeed in this position, the successful applicant must evidence the ability to work in a cross-cultural environment. Previous experience in a similar role will be highly regarded.

 

Location

Kubin Community, Mua Island, Torres Strait, Queensland.  Mua Island is a 15-minute flight from Thursday Island, with multiple daily connections to Cairns.

 

About Us

Moa Arts is located in Kubin village, Mua Island in the Torres Strait (Zenadth Kes), halfway between the tip of Queensland and Papua New Guinea. Moa Arts is a not-for-profit Indigenous Corporation and Public Benevolent Institution, registered with ORIC as Ngalmun Lagau Minaral Torres Strait Islander Corporation. The art centre was established in 2009, building on a long history of artistic excellence in the community.

Moa Arts supports emerging and established artists from Kubin Community. These artists work in a range of traditional and contemporary mediums, creating works that are exhibited and collected nationally and internationally. The art centre is a vital contributor to Kubin, providing meaningful employment and professional development opportunities to artists and arts workers.

Moa Arts has a strong artistic plan in place, that sees workshops and skills developed on the island coupled with an exhibition program that includes major art fairs in Australia as well as international opportunities.

Selection Criteria

Essential

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate sensitively and effectively with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people, and with a diverse range of stakeholders, including industry and government partners.
  • Knowledge and understanding of First Nations people and cultures and the issues affecting Indigenous people in Australia. This includes an understanding of cultural obligations and protocols of First Nations people.
  • Experience working with remote Indigenous communities.
  • Knowledge of the Indigenous and/or national contemporary arts sector.
  • Minimum of two years’ experience in a similar role; or an equivalent combination of the relevant qualifications and experience.
  • Proven ability to lead and manage projects and project teams, and lead the governance, administration, and management of a not-for-profit organisation.
  • Proactive administrative and organisational skills with fluent and effective written and verbal communication.
  • Willingness to travel and work outside of normal work hours, and holder of a full driver’s license.

    DUTY STATEMENT

    The Manager is responsible for the following duties, in line with the six key business areas outlined in the Moa Arts Strategic and Operational Plans 2024-29:

    Financial Management

  • Ensure the organisation operates in an ethical and transparent business framework and liaise closely with Moa Arts’ bookkeeper and auditor.
  • Financial management including setting and managing budgets, liaison with the bookkeeper and monitoring artist payments, sales and cash flow.
  • Prepare funding submissions from various government and other agencies and comply with reporting and acquittals in a timely manner.
  • Administration

  • Maintain efficient and accurate management systems, ensuring procedures are in line with best practice methods.
  • Ensure all Indigenous Cultural and Intellectual Property, Moral Rights and Copyright are protected.
  • Artistic and Professional Development

  • Support the production and presentation of high-quality artworks, adhering to quality control and best practice.
  • Facilitate professional development, mentoring, training and employment opportunities for staff, Directors, and artists including participation in exhibitions, festivals, forums, conferences, and other programs and events.
  • Undertake special projects in consultation with the Directors, artists and other stakeholders.
  •  Sales and Operational

  • Supervise and manage staff, Artsworkers and interim staff including contractors, consultants, projects workers and visitors.
  • Develop and manage new and existing sponsors, clients, customers and other stakeholders in line with Moa Arts’ strategic and operational plans and policies.
  • Oversee the production, cataloguing, marketing, sales and dispatch of artwork through the SAM database, Moa Arts website and social media platforms.
  • Develop and maintain communication with community arts and culture centres in the region and strengthen networks within and between communities.
  • Ensure the appropriate use and maintenance of Moa Arts assets and comply with WHS standards.
  • Governance

  • Recognise and respect existing Traditional Law and leadership frameworks.
  • Uphold good governance procedures and assist Directors in the coordination and documentation of meetings, ensuring the Corporation meets all legislative obligations and responsibilities.
  • Adhere to Moa Arts Code of Conduct, the Indigenous Art Code and the Mua Island community’s cultural protocols.
