This course, Writing Tools: The Fundamentals of Fiction with Melina Marchetta, will be held at Writing NSW in Sydney.
Every writer has their toolbox, holding instruments designed to create sharp, three-dimensional dialogue that not only enhances plot and themes, but characterisation. Or to hone in on the art of creating tone and atmosphere through the use of consonant sounds and word choice.
In this one-day workshop with Melina Marchetta, participants will work on pieces of writing with an emphasis on dialogue, descriptive language, revealing plot through detail and playing with tense and the narrative voice. We will also explore the importance of editing and the ‘first draft.’
Through a series of presentations, practical exercises and small group activities we will explore the fundamentals of writing fiction with the aim ultimately, to understand that there is a craft to becoming better writers regardless of where you are in your journey to be published. Participants will leave the workshop with confidence and the skills to continue on their works, no matter what stage in the creative process.
