How far can we push the limits of the human form before it transcends itself? ‘Uppers’ presents a body of new hyperreal oil paintings and sculpture from Victoria Todorov, curated by Sarah Hibbs, exploring themes of pro-plastic aesthetics, productivity pharmaceuticals, and performative beauty standards. Todorov’s bricolage of camp references and garish displays of wealth and consumption exposes contemporary economic labor and class systems at work.
Victoria Todorov is an interdisciplinary artist based in Melbourne, Australia, working across installation, video, sculpture, and painting. Her practice draws from online communities and their intersection with the art world, exploring themes of technology, identity, and culture. Todorov’s work uses bold, garish palettes and textural surfaces to reflect the constant flood of images in modern life. With comedic undertones, she tests the cyborgian leaky distinctions between woman and machine, nature and technology, self and other. Her art interrogates performativity, accessibility, and failure, using the language of the ‘contemporary art lexicon’ from an outsider’s perspective. Todorov has exhibited at the National Art School, 99% Gallery, Discordia Gallery, Palazzo San Giuseppe, Punk Cafe and West Space.
Sarah Hibbs is a freelancer curator and creative producer living and working on Gadigal land in Sydney. With experience in the commercial and independent sectors, her curatorial interests lie in feminist and queer theory, as well as alternative models for the creative sector that foster ethical practice and collegiate ways of working together. She has curated projects including ‘A tide is a very long wave’ at Syrup Contemporary, ‘Potential Space’ at a Kennards Storage Space, ‘Dean Cross: some things to throw away” at Bus Projects. She was Co-Chair of experimental online arts publication Runway Journal in 2023, and is a current PhD candidate at RMIT researching the Australian art market.
