TIME AS A SONIC GESTURE invites heightened sensory experiences using body, memory and motion as the resonant site. This performance showcases the interplay of high-fidelity audio precision through wireless headphones and improvised experimental music in the gallery space.
Audiences can come and go from the gallery over the three hour duration. An invitation to tune into the nuances of their perception with the same refined acuity that is embedded in O’Reilly’s artistic practice is offered and informed by the creative adaptation of her lifelong sensory experience as an autistic artist and musician.
Local guest artists Laura Altman and Alexandra Spence will join O’Reilly throughout the performance improvising with her and performing solo to shape and layer real-time sonic architecture that draws on the acclaimed exploratory music aesthetics of both artists.
O’Reilly’s intention is to voice sensory interconnection in deeply nuanced ways, to reflect the artist’s intimate communication with sound as material, and the hypnotic, repetitive methods that shape her composition of music, video work, and live performances. Originally from Aotearoa New Zealand and now based in Sydney on Gadigal Land, O’Reilly’s studio practice at Church Street Studios in Camperdown explores the nature of sound as intrinsic to social and environmental relations.
The concept for TIME AS A SONIC GESTURE, emerged in response to Katelyn Geard’s work, I Have Something to Say, (exhibited in GRAPHITE, at DRAW Space, April 2024). This work was described as a drawing ‘soft as a whisper’ in its reach beyond two dimensions. TIME AS A SONIC GESTURE plays with this notion of persistence of vision, to instantiate time as a trans-disciplinary gesture of collective presence in the making and sharing of art.
This performance is part of a series exploring the relationship of sound to drawing curated by Belinda Yee (@belindayee) for DRAW Space.
This project is supported by an Inner West Council Arts Grant and assisted by PACT.
