CELEBRATING 100 FAIRS: THE OTHER ART FAIR UNLEASHES CREATIVE CHAOS DOWN UNDER

The Other Art Fair Sydney returns to White Bay Cruise Terminal in Balmain this 3 – 6 October, 2024.

Get ready, Australia. The Other Art Fair, the rebellious cousin of stuffy, traditional art events, is crashing into town. Taking place in Sydney from October 3rd to October 6th in Sydney and in Melbourne from January 30th to February 2nd 2025, these upcoming editions will be anything but ordinary. The Other Art Fair is where creativity gets real, rules go out the window, and art refuses to be anything but bold.

Presented by Saatchi Art, this isn’t just another art fair – it’s a global celebration of the 100th global edition of The Other Art Fair with hundreds of emerging and independent artists who are here to shake things up. Expect boundary-pushing works, wild interactive installations, and experiences so cutting-edge you might just get a paper cut. Forget what you know about art fairs; this is where the bold, the bizarre, and the downright brilliant come to play.

Founder Ryan Stainer is buzzing about hitting the big 1-0-0: “It’s incredible to see how a small art event in London has grown into a worldwide phenomenon. Australia has been absolutely pivotal in that journey, with Sydney being the first market outside of the UK which began The Other Art Fair’s growth. Together,  Sydney and Melbourne have embraced The Other Art Fair with an energy and creativity that’s unmatched, helping to shape it into the global movement it is today. With 18 editions down under and counting, the Australian market has truly been the beating heart of our success. We’re celebrating the Aussie spirit that’s made The Other Art Fair the ultimate anti-fair.”

And it’s not just organisers who are stoked. Exhibiting artist Dilara Niriella is living proof that The Other Art Fair is the launchpad for fresh, fearless talent: “My first show was at The Other Art Fair Sydney back in December 2021, and it changed everything. Now I’ve been lucky enough to show my work in Brooklyn and LA, meeting artists from all over the world who are just as wild and passionate as I am. If you’re an artist ready to shake things up, this is where you start.”

Dilara’s experience at The Other Art Fair has led to multiple opportunities for her all over the world. Since exhibiting her work at the 2021 Sydney Fair, she has built her profile and gone on to be a 2023 Finalist in the Ravenswood Women’s Art Prize, the highest value professional art prize for women in Australia.

Former model, now full-time artist and first time exhibitor at the upcoming Sydney edition of The Other Art Fair Kyly Boldy Clarke added: “The Other Art Fair has played a pivotal role in enlivening and electrifying Sydney’s art market since it first arrived in Australia. I’ve witnessed this impact first-hand, both as a long-time fan and attendee, and now for the first time as an exhibiting artist. I’m honoured to be participating in such an important moment in Sydney’s cultural calendar and especially as the Fair marks its 100th edition.”

Celebrating 100 Global Editions with Sydney local, John Paine

To celebrate The Other Art Fair’s milestone edition of reaching 100 Fairs globally, Fair Director Luke Potkin has  commissioned the super-talented illustrator and cartoonist John Paine to create 100 art-related drawings, which will make up an interactive mural at The Fair.

You’ll be able to pick out famous artworks, cultural moments and artists, and help John bring them to life at the Fair by colouring them in – perhaps you’ll colour Frida’s hair blue, or make sure a duct taped banana gets an accurate yellow, the choice is up to you! At the end of the Fair, there will be a full-colour design, and a sense of how mischievous you were in your colour choices…

Tattooing

Nah Mate Pokes is a stick and poke artist from Sydney. His work ranges from childlike hand-drawn pieces to delicate, clean-lined images. The subject matter of his drawings can veer from familiar childhood characters who’ve taken a bizarre and dark turn to simple pieces that are cute, silly and always recognisably Nah Mate. First in, best inked!

HIGHLIGHT ARTISTS

The committee of art-word experts has carefully handpicked over 100+ artists to exhibit at the fair, each with their own unique story and artistic journeys:

Seasoned digital artist Michael Wallner is well-known for his highly acclaimed depictions of city-based art from all corners of the world. Originally from the UK, Michael spent twenty years working in TV before transitioning to his art career, where he celebrates the beauty of the city through its shapes, outlines and colours.

Multimedia artist based in Sydney, George Hall’s art career kicked off by accident rather than design. Nine years ago, George posted his artwork on social media and no less than a month later he was so busy painting and printing that he resigned from his day job. A queer man, George’s work uses rich colours to celebrate queer themes; how far we have come, what we need to protect and how far we need to go.

A self-taught artist and naturalist based in California, Havilah Albrego draws on her underwater experiences as a scuba diver in her artwork to bridge the gap between art and science. Through the study of acrylic on canvas painting, Albrego’s tranquil depictions of the ocean and marine life encourage viewers to reflect on humanity’s connection with nature, and have won her acclaim in the US.

A Chilean-Australian interdisciplinary artist, curator, and educator based in Sydney, Miriam Cabello’s mixed media artwork features Olympic and universal heroes to explore what it means to be a hero in the twenty-first century. Her new multi-layered works feature some of the finest figurative contemporary paintings of universal heroes, from the celebrated to the conspicuous, and from athletes to activists.
