Are you an artist or creative practitioner looking to expand your creative toolkit? Rap about your passions, make portals to sonic worlds and harmonise with others at The Channel across the Asia TOPA triennial.

Process Lab is an event series bringing together creatives from the Performing Arts industry to delve into the creative process of making contemporary work.

Through exclusive workshops and panel discussions the series provides space for artists, producers and change-makers to share, reflect and interrogate their creative practice and celebrate their latest projects.

The series focuses on information sharing and skills building while responding to trends, opportunities and challenges that the industry faces today. Each session aims to equip current artists and producers with the tools and knowledge they need to advance their careers and deepen their expertise.

Avatar Lab with Justin Talplacido Shoulder aka Phasmahammer

Join Justin Talplacido Shoulder for an experimental workshop blending storytelling, movement, and craft. Create performance avatars inspired by your cultural heritage and personal mythology, using conceptual devising methods to transform key symbols into new mythical figures. Justin is a Filipino Australian artist working in performance, sculpture, video and collective events. Their practice is an eco-cosmology of alter personas based on queered ancestral myth. With limited capacity, early application is essential through EOI.

Hip-Hop Dance Foundations with Cypher Culture

Slide into the rhythm with Cypher Culture’s Hip-Hop Foundations workshop, featuring live beats by DJ Tha Wzard from Moro Beats (Philippines). Open to professional movers and dance hobbyists, aged 15 and up, this session explores the essence of Hip-Hop—the call and response of your body to the music. The workshop celebrates the raw energy of Hip-Hop and provides an entry point to the fundamentals of this street born dance form.

Rap Foundations with Cypher Culture

Rap Foundations is an exclusive workshop, led by Miss A and Fateeha of Moro Beats, for aspiring and emerging femme and gender-diverse rappers, aged 18 and up. Dive into the art of lyricism, beat selection, and performance in a supportive environment. Hone your craft with expert mentors and connect with like-minded peers. Whether you’re just starting or refining your skills, this workshop is your chance to level up your flow.

Capturing A Life – In conversation with William Yang & Tessa Leong

Join an intimate conversation between pioneering artist, William Yang and Dramaturg/Co-director, Tessa Leong as they reflect on the process of making Milestone together. Now in his 80th year, Yang has been a trailblazing champion of Asian-Australian culture, Yang has documented pivotal moments from Sydney’s LGBTQI+ movement to Australia’s bohemian artist communities across five transformative decades. Hear Yang discuss his unique approach of storytelling and performance in his captivating work.

Developing a Practice with Non-traditional Western Instruments with Mindy Meng Wang & Monica Lim

Mon 3 March at 6:00 pm 

In this workshop, Mindy Meng Wang and Monica Lim will discuss their experiences of developing a creative practice built around non-traditional Western instruments. In Mindy’s case, the Chinese harp or guzheng, and in Monica’s case, with emerging tech and digital interfaces. They will describe the challenges they faced and the ways in which they have navigated these. Participants are invited to bring along their instruments and ideas to workshop after the discussion.

Peroveta Harmonies with Australian Art Orchestra and Tatana Village Choir

Wed 5 March at 1:15 pm

Drop in on this very special lunchtime workshop with Australian Art Orchestra’s Artistic Director, Aaron Choulai and Papua New Guinea’s Tatana Village choir to learn the Motuan singing style of Peroveta. Born from the 19th century colonisation of Papua, Peroveta transforms the traditional harmony, melody and rhythm of Western hymns into an entirely unique form of choral music, typically performed in marriage, death and birth rituals in Tatana.
