Celebrate the opening of Parlingarri Amintiya Ningani Awungarra: Old and New at Jilamara Arts’.

Old and new. Here and now. This major survey of contemporary art from the Tiwi Islands celebrates artists from Jilamara Arts & Crafts in the community of Milikapiti.

The exhibition features newly commissioned and recent works by Walter Brooks, Kaye Brown, Johnathon World Peace Bush, Timothy Cook, Raelene Kerinauia Lampuwatu, Michelle Pulatuwayu Woody Minnapinni, Arthurina Moreen, Janice Murray Pungautiji, Matthew Freddy Puruntatameri, Patrick Freddy Puruntatameri, Conrad Kamilowra Tipungwuti, Columbiere Tipungwuti, Mickey Fogarty Wilson, D.Wilson and Pedro Wonaeamirri.

The exhibition also pays tribute to the late senior women of Jilamara whose innovation and adaptations of jilamara were instrumental in raising awareness of Tiwi art in the 1980s—Kutuwulumi Purawarrumpatu (Kitty Kantilla), Maryanne Mungatopi, Mary Magdalene Tipungwuti and Taracarijimo Freda Warlapinni—including works from the community-owned Muluwurri Museum.

Join us at 3pm Saturday 24 May 2025, as we commence the celebrations with a Smoking Ceremony and Welcome to Country, paying respect to the land and its First Nations custodians. Following this, engage in a panel discussion featuring esteemed artists from Jilamara Arts. Based in Milikapiti on Melville Island, the artists will share insights into their creative practices, the significance of their work, and the connections to cultural life within their community.

Located at the entrance to the UNSW Art & Design Paddington campus, UNSW Galleries is just 5 minutes from Sydney’s CBD. Find us next to the Arthouse Kitchen.

We welcome guests with wheelchairs and prams. Elevator access is available for the upper level, ask our friendly staff at reception to assist with directions. All service animals are warmly welcomed.
