Two back-to-back ensembles present original jazz at The Counts.
Jazz Luminary Ted Nettelbeck makes his Count’s debut following his nephew Alexander’s performance with the New Impromptu Quartet. Featuring vocalist Karina Lehman and special guests, expect storytelling, swing and contemporary sounds.
Ted Nettelbeck is one of Australia’s most cherished jazz pianists with a career spanning over 60 years. An inductee of South Australian Music Hall of Fame, Ted has worked with jazz legends such as Mark Murphy, Milt Jackson, Johnny Griffin, Sheila Jordan, Herb Ellis, Dale Barlow, Bob Barnard, Allan Browne, Bryan Brown, Don Burrows, John Hoffman, Graeme Lyall, Bernie McGann and James Morrison. Performance highlights include Wangaratta Jazz and Blues Festival, Adelaide Jazz Festival and the Adelaide Fringe. He was a seminal lecturer of Jazz Studies at the Elder Conservatorium, University of Adelaide and is a patron of the South Australian Jazz Archive. His compositions have been published in the South Australian Real Book, and the Australian Real Book.
Now a Melbourne resident, Ted brings his ensemble to the Counts to perform original compositions and favourite standards with friends and special guests.
The New Impromptu Quartet Featuring Karina Lehman explores styles from jazz to Bossa Nova, Latin, funk, reggae, and soul, with a fresh and open musical approach.

Since 2009 the quartet has performed with artists such as Vivian Sessoms (USA), Lazaro Numa (Cuba) , Eric McGrath (Ireland/Spain). Pat Powell, Oscar Jimenez and Leila Negrau (Reunion), and Paul Van Ross. Each member of the ensemble is a celebrated instrumentalist in their right, touring internationally throughout Australia, Canada, USA, Germany, Japan, Spain, and New Zealand at major festivals including the Melbourne International Jazz Festival, Tuscia in Jazz (Italy), WOMADelaide, Mordialloc by the Bay, Toronto Jazz Festival, and others.
Karina Lehman is a Chilean singer/songwriter and recording artist. Drawing inspiration from a diverse range of artists, including Natalia Lafourcade, Violeta Parra, Perota Chingo, Lido Pimienta, Bjork, and Marissa Monte, Karina has created a sound that is truly her own. She sings in Portuguese, Spanish and English and Beat Magazine has described her sound as “exciting, refreshing, and undeniably unique”.
