Hands-on creative workshops for young people return to Kingston Arts

 

Step away from the screen and get your hands dirty at Kaleidoscope, our school holiday arts program. We’ve got a stellar line-up of workshops for young people aged 10–17. You’ll learn how to drum, create a comic book, sing musical theatre, craft your own doll and more!

 

Create a Comic Book with Rebel Stepz

Get ready for a whirlwind creative adventure with Rebel Stepz’s ‘Anime Comic Book Creation’ workshop. Embark on a journey through the action-packed pages of superhero sagas to the captivating artistry of manga-inspired graphic novels. Discover the secrets behind crafting dynamic characters, epic storylines and captivating visuals that leap off the page. With expert guidance, you’ll master essential drawing techniques, bringing your imagination to life one stroke at a time.

Create Your Own Clay Magnets

Try your hand at sculpting clay and walk away with your own set of colourful magnets. This workshop is ideal for beginners and guides you through shaping and painting clay. You’ll add your own special touches to create a magnet that’s unique to you and perfect for jazzing up the fridge.

Make a Monoprint with a Touch of Nature

Make a piece of art inspired from nature! In this workshop, artist Melissa Gaggiano will show you how to make amazing artworks using interesting objects found in nature. Mono-printing is a type of printmaking where each print is unique. You’ll explore abstract patterns and shapes to create a masterpiece you can proudly take home. All materials provided – just bring an art smock or wear clothes you don’t mind getting paint on.

Youth Musical Theatre Workshop

Spend a morning learning songs and scenes from the popular musical Annie. Multi-award-winning musical theatre star Queenie van de Zandt will lead this fun workshop that’ll boost your confidence, polish your skills and get you ready to step into the spotlight. Remember to wear comfortable clothes and close-toed shoes. Bring a snack and a bottle of water too.

Teen Musical Theatre Workshop

Join the multi-award-winning musical theatre star, Queenie van de Zandt, in this dynamic half-day workshop. Through performing scenes and songs from well-known musicals, you’ll learn about character development, scene analysis and how to audition confidently for a musical. Remember to wear comfortable clothes and closed-toed shoes and bring a snack and your water bottle too.

Improv and Instant Acting

This workshop is all about quick thinking and endless laughter. Join actor and professional funny man Rob Lloyd to learn the basics of improvisation: how to spontaneously create characters, scenes and stories and have a rollicking good time doing so. Improv is a fun and creative process powered by imagination and collaboration. Popularised by shows like Theatre Sports, Whose Line is it Anyway? and Thank God You’re Here, improvisation may look difficult, but like any artform, it just takes learning a few easy techniques and skills.

Make a Marvelous and Magical Doll

Have fun crafting your own magical doll with artist Melissa Gaggiano. Melissa will guide you through making a soft doll inspired by the worlds of The Wind in the Willows and the TV series Sweet Tooth. You’ll learn how easy doll-making can be – you don’t even need to have prior sewing skills. You’ll walk away from the class with your own special doll and an instruction sheet so you can make more. All materials are provided – just bring a snack and a bottle of water.

Rhythm Jam: A Drumming Workshop

Can you feel the beat? Musician Rod Pilois is bringing out his drum sets, and you’re invited to make some noise. Discover the fun of percussion in this hands-on workshop as Rod shows you the techniques and rhythms on the djembe and stick drums. You’ll learn the basics of creating captivating beats and get to challenge yourself with impressive rhythmic arrangements.
