For the first time in almost 20 years, State Opera South Australia presents Jonathan Dove’s acclaimed modern opera, Flight.
Inspired by the true story of an Iranian refugee who was forced to live at Charles de Gaulle Airport for 18 years, this contemporary opera unfolds in the setting of an airport terminal during a storm. The story centres around a stateless refugee and explores the lives of ten stranded passengers, crew and airport workers, who are forced to confront their situations and each other while awaiting their fate. Through moments of humour, tension and profound connection, Flight reveals the fragility and resilience of human spirit.
The production is led by Australian director Stephen Barlow, who returns home to bring a fresh perspective to this touching and thought-provoking story. British countertenor James Laing, Anna Voshege and Teddy Tahu Rhodes join the ensemble cast, bringing Dove’s vivid characters to life. Charlotte Corderoy, will conduct the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra to bring to life this stunning piece of music.
After its Australian premiere at the Adelaide Festival in 2006, Flight has been hailed as an opera that soars above the ordinary and its return to Adelaide promises to be one of the most anticipated events of the season.
With its unforgettable music, dazzling sets and relatable characters, Flight offers an operatic experience like no other. Whether you’re an opera enthusiast or new to the genre, this production promises an exhilarating journey.
Flight has a three-show season in Adelaide from 8-10 May 2025 at Her Majesty’s Theatre, with tickets starting at $75 and a special offer of only $35 for those under 30. For more information and to secure your seats, please visit https://stateopera.com.au/productions/flight/
