3 days of intense learning, understanding and enjoying crowd science in a group of like-minded professionals, this course is suitable for those responsible for crowd safety in larger-scale public contexts. Previous participants include Council staff, Festivals, large-scale event organisers, venue managers, law enforcement and precinct managers.

Join Roderick van Gelder for three days of professional development that will stand you in good stead for years.

Areas covered include

  • Developing more awareness about the behaviour of crowds and individuals within crowds
  • Better understanding of crowd reactions to different developments during an event
  • Insight into how public behaviour can be modelled
  • Increased understanding of how techniques that contribute to public safety can be applied to your event

After completing the course, you will be better able to

  • Recognise dangerous situations for planning and assessing events (crowd risk analysis);
  • Understand crowd behaviour in the event environment, under normal circumstances and in emergencies;
  • Model an event in phases (inflow, circulation, outflow) and recognise factors of influence (design, information and management);
  • Lay out risk analyses for planning, designing and managing areas where crowds gather and move around;
  • Apply guidelines for managing audience movements for various types of locations;
  • Articulate which factors determine the risks and safety of crowds
  • Use crowd science as business development by improving the experience

Limited places to enhance learning for all and a great mix of industry people to meet and learn with.

What participants say:

“A riveting few days completing Event Safety Institute’s Crowd Safety: Applied Crowd Science course.

This experience has deepened my understanding of crowd dynamics, risk assessment, and practical safety strategies—critical skills for ensuring safe and successful events.

Crowd safety is more important than ever, and this course reinforced the value of using data-driven approaches to plan, manage, and respond effectively in high-density environments. Whatever the event, applying crowd science is key to protecting attendees and enhancing their experience.

I’m looking forward to applying these principles in my work and contributing to safer events for all!

If you’re involved in event planning, venue, safety, or operations, I highly recommend the course.”
Erica Kennedy (Brisbane course, 2024)
