‘Circling Around’ is a celebration of connection, creativity and the circular form. Presented by the Weaverbirds, this collaborative exhibition showcases the diverse outcomes that emerge from the shared practice of basketmaking techniques.
Each week, the Weaverbirds gather around Joy’s kitchen table to create, chat, share and learn. Their conversations weave through the histories and cultures of basketmaking, exploring techniques such as twining, coiling, looping, random weaving, cord-making, stitching and wrapping. Occasional exchanges with the Basketmakers of Victoria further enrich their work.
Sustainability and community are at the heart of their practice. Many of the materials used -hazelnut and olive cuttings, daffodil leaves, dried flowers, feathers, palm inflorescence, tapa, and beach-washed rope – are collected, recycled and shared by group members, friends and the wider community.
Through ‘Circling Around’, the Weaverbirds invite audiences to experience the interconnectedness of their craft and the infinite possibilities that arise from working together.
