Anti-Racism & the Arts Masterclasses 

Diversity Arts Australia (DARTS) and TAFE NSW, with support from the NSW Premier’s Department, have partnered to deliver four masterclasses on anti-racism and leadership in the arts. The program will train 15 participants on how to advocate for racial equity and promote anti-racism practices within their communities and the broader sector. Participants will then jointly deliver presentations/workshops about the Anti-Racism and the Arts Campaign.

The broader Anti-Racism & the Arts campaign is designed to counter racism within a culturally and linguistically diverse (CaLD) context. 

Sessions run from mid-September until mid-October at the Arts and Cultural Exchange (ACE) in Parramatta, with an option for online participation. 

 

WHO IS ELIGIBLE TO PARTICIPATE?

  • People from underrepresented culturally and linguistically diverse, Culturally and Racially Marginalised, refugee and/or migrant backgrounds.
  • People aged 18 years and over
  • Women, gender-diverse people and people with disability are encouraged to apply.

 

DATES AND SCHEDULE

Four Tuesday evenings from 5:30-8:00 pm. 

Networking and refreshments: 5:30-6:00 pm   Masterclass: 6:00-8:00 pm

 

SELECTION CRITERIA

  • Be available to attend all 4 masterclasses and actively participate.
  • Be prepared to deliver a two-hour workshop on Anti-Racism & the Arts. You will be paid to deliver these workshops.
  • Be from a CaLD, CaRM, refugee or migrant background.
  • Be aged 18 years or over.
  • Be willing to provide feedback on the draft Anti-Racism in the Arts campaign.
  • Have an interest in, or be involved in, the arts, screen or creative sectors.

About the Trainer:

Dr Paula Abood is a writer, community cultural development practitioner, creative producer and educator. She has worked with diverse communities for over three decades across the arts, community and education sectors. Dr Abood was the 2013 recipient of Creative Australia’s Ros Bower Award for lifetime achievement in community arts and cultural development (CACD) and was awarded a 2018 CACD Fellowship. Dr Abood has developed learning resources and taught widely on subjects including human rights approaches in critical community development practice. She is the Chair of Arab Theatre Studio and a member of the Advisory Committee of the Community Refugee Welcome Centre on Gadigal land. Paula is also the Senior Education Officer – Multicultural Engagement at TAFE NSW.
