Bachelor of Music

Take your talent to the next level

Join one of Australia’s leading music schools and build your skills to become an adaptable and creative musician, ready to enter professional life. In the Bachelor of Music, you’ll have the opportunity to explore a musical specialisation of your choice, as well as be exposed to a range of diverse styles and idioms including classical, contemporary, jazz, popular, electronic, experimental and world music.

You will undertake collaborative and ensemble work appropriate to your field of study, aural awareness training, music theory, critical listening, contemporary music-making practices, and contextual music studies.

From your second year, you’ll be able to focus your efforts further, choosing from majors in Performance, Contemporary Creative Practices, Production and Entrepreneurship, and Community Education.

At Queensland Conservatorium, discover your artistic identity as you develop as both a person and a performer in a welcoming and supportive environment. You’ll benefit from our global connections as you learn from, and work closely with, award-winning music educators. You’ll also have opportunities to gain credit for project studies and music industry engagement and internships, so you can transition smoothly into professional life. A wide range of elective courses are also available to deepen and broaden your musical experience.

You may audition on more than one instrument or specialisation, and the program provides opportunities for development in multiple instrumental and creative specialisations. After successfully completing your undergraduate studies, you will graduate with a Bachelor of Music and be eligible to apply for a graduate entry teacher preparation program, or transition to a fourth undergraduate or honours year.

Majors

Performance

Grow as an artist and professional by developing advanced skills in classical, contemporary and/or jazz performance. This major has a strong focus on high performance levels, effective collaboration with peers, and the expression of a distinct artistic identity.

Contemporary Creative Practices

This major includes elements of composition, creative music technology and popular music. It offers students the opportunity to create original music as a composer, digital practitioner, songwriter and/or sound artist as well as a strong grounding in the role of computing in modern music-making.

Production and Entrepreneurship

Collaborate with students from diverse disciplines, including musicians, singers, performers, composers, engineers and producers, to bring works to life whether on the stage, film or live online. Students will follow projects from ideation to execution, with the potential for public viewings.

Community Education and Leadership

The Community Education and Leadership major provides students with the skills and frameworks to teach and lead participatory music-making in a variety of community and educational settings. You’ll develop your leadership and teaching abilities and explore the practical, theoretical and ethical implications of working across social groups in schools, hospitals, prisons, cultural centres and more.

This program will be available to commencing students from Trimester 1, 2025.
