Mitchell Butel announced as STC’s new Artistic Director

After leading State Theatre Company South Australia for the past six years, Butel returns to Sydney to lead the company that first inspired his love of theatre.

Award-winning actor, director, writer and producer Mitchell Butel has been appointed as the new Artistic Director and co-CEO of Sydney Theatre Company (STC).

Butel, an experienced and versatile theatre artist, comes to STC from State Theatre Company South Australia (STCSA), where he has served as Artistic Director for the past six years.

Richard Watts OAM is ArtsHub's National Performing Arts Editor; he also presents the weekly program SmartArts on Three Triple R FM. Richard is a life member of the Melbourne Queer Film Festival, a Melbourne Fringe Festival Living Legend, and was awarded the Sidney Myer Performing Arts Awards' Facilitator's Prize in 2020.
