In recent years the Australian fashion sector has seen a surge of Indigenous artists and designers taking centre stage, headlining events such as CIAF’s fashion showcase and Powerhouse Ultimo’s creative residency featuring First Nations Fashion and Design.
However, the designer, artist and art centre relationship can be nuanced and difficult to navigate.
Recently Senior Solicitor Donna Robinson and Principal Solicitor Susannah Derry from the Arts Law Centre delivered a detailed guide on negotiating the contractual obligations that promotes best practices when working with Indigenous artists and designers. The project is delivered in partnership with the Darwin Aboriginal Art Fair Foundation’s Indigenous Fashion Project.
